Between 5th and 7th of December the Advocacy Visit “Tips for Brussels’ Trips” was organised by Out of the Box International in cooperation with Civil Rights Defenders for Human rights activists from Belarus at European Institutions. During the visit, delegates from the Association of Journalists, the Barys Zvozskau Belarusian Human Rights House and the Human Rights Centre Viasna had meetings with six Members of European Parliament and representatives of DG NEAR and EEAS.
In the past two years, Belarusian authorities have taken certain steps toward reducing violent repression against civil society activists, human rights defenders, participants of peaceful assemblies and independent journalists; however, no systematic change has been undertaken, and the repressive legislation remains in place. The latest reaction of the Belarusian authorities to the European Parliament resolution on Belarus adopted on 24 November 2016, shows that the resolution itself is seen as unfriendly and unconstructive. This also reveals that Belarus is still reluctant to undertake meaningful steps directed at the full implementation of fundamental human rights and freedoms and the rule of law in the country.
