Dear audience, we are thrilled to present to you the freshly baked outcomes of the TackleDisInfo Local Forum carried out by us, OTB International!

Introduction

TackleDisInfo project aims to equip educators and trainers with the necessary digital literacy and critical thinking skills to counteract disinformation, nurturing digitally adept European citizens. To achieve this, TackleDisInfo is set to create an interactive digital platform, incorporating gamification strategies to educate educators and trainers on digital literacy and critical thinking, consistent with the EU’s (2022) Guidelines on Tackling Disinformation and Promoting Digital Literacy.

TackleDisInfo Local Forums

Local forums serve as a platform to gather qualitative insights from key stakeholders, such as VET educators, trainers, local actors, and community leaders. These discussions aim to identify challenges, share experiences, and collect best practices to shape and refine the training content of the TackleDisInfo project.

Local Forum in Belgium

The TackleDisInfo Local Forum in Belgium was held on the 15th & 17th of March 2025. For each day, the sessions were divided into two main focus groups, followed by a survey to be done by March 24th. Tackle Disinformation Local Forum aimed to spark discussions aimed to identify challenges, share experiences, and collect best practices to shape and refine the training content of the TackleDisInfo project. Participants shared their experiences and perspectives while exploring digital literacy in Belgium. Among the main challenges identified were regional discrepancies at the political level, the digital divide, time constraints to include digital literacy training in the VET curriculum, as well as obstacles arising from non-mandatory in-service training. Among the best practices available that encourage educational digital literacy content, participants highlighted eLearning platforms such as E-classe, KlasCement or Coursera, as well as civil organisations such as EU DisInfoLab which can inspire the TackleDisInfo educational package.

Participants suggested that the TackleDisInfo educational package should consist of a blended training format that combines in-person sessions with online engaging options. The proposed structure for each module encompasses 1.5 hours of interactive group learning followed by individual self-paced learning approaches, amounting to a total of around 15-18 hours of training divided into 5-6 modules. Furthermore, the training programme should be supported with a user-friendly eLearning platform in which all modules, along with the corresponding learning material and resources, should be uploaded. Participants should have an available option to connect online to the training sessions through the eLearning platform.

Finally, participants found a strong need for gamification & storytelling techniques in each module to enhance the learning process and interiorisation of disinformation dynamics. Interactive group sessions, expert engagement, real-life case studies, self-paced learning material, additional resources for further information such as podcasts, and the use of the eLearning platform as both a Moodle educational management system & a digital repository with all training resources, were emphasised as essential teaching methods to foster engagement and improve learning outcomes.

Conclusion

In conclusion, during the TackleDisInfo Local Forum discussions, participants exchanged their experiences and highlighted several key aspects to bear in mind when developing a high-quality educational training package within the TackleDisInfo project. The Local Forum captured in-depth feedback on the challenges, needs, and best practices related to digital literacy and disinformation in Belgium.

Thank you to all the enthusiastic participants for their valuable input. The findings from these sessions will provide essential input to adapt the TackleDisInfo training content effectively to local contexts.

Why Out of the Box International

The seemingly ever-lasting depression of European economies has shaken the very foundations of many European societies. The shear rate of unemployment in Europe and the omnipresent environmental crisis coupled with the often frustratingly slow process of decision making in the EU, are calling for civil society actors to step in and fill the void.

In the aftermath of the 2008. economic crisis, the apprehension of falling under the spell of apathy of economic depression across the continent has not been easy to shake off. However, pinpointing the culprits for the current state of affairs on any particular EU decision maker is not the answer. Nonetheless, the fact remains that the current approach to the economic and environmental crisis hasn’t yet shown the affected citizens the light at the end of the tunnel.

As representatives of the civil society we feel the need to make our voice heard in the midst of the current debate on economic crisis. Being a social enterprise we offer new and feasible ideas in education and community work, creative cross-sectorial cooperation among different actors and strong networking coalitions to turn these dire economic challenges into possibilities through social entrepreneurship initiatives which aim at benefiting wide range of citizens, particularly vulnerable groups and those affected by the economic crisis.

Social entrepreneurship is a simple concept that has been put into practice by civil society actors for the benefit of a specific social group or people, and this is precisely what we want: to create projects and initiatives with fresh ideas in different policies, educational programs or tools, support businesses, empower cultural initiatives and offer different solutions to individuals, corporate bodies, everybody who believe that we can have more Creative, Innovative and Cohesive Europe.
