“YOUth on AIR – developing active participation and intercultural dialogue among youth through online media tools”

As the saying goes – all good things must come to an end. And so the time has come to say farewell to our Youth on Air project, which was an integral part of Out of the Box International activities.

During the project, we have managed to achieve many things, among which the Youth on Air Partners:

– developed the quality of support systems for youth activities and the capabilities of civil society organisations in the youth field through using digital radio as the main tool;

– strengthened and built, through training and exchange of good practices,  competences of young people in digital media to practice their right for freedom of expression by providing space for youngsters from different ethnic and religious backgrounds to jointly partake in a learning activity that will enhance their digital skills, knowledge and capacities.

– offered the participants of the project the chance to explore the power of digital radio and its ability to significantly advance the position of youth, as it is a medium which is not yet being used to its full potential in most communities.

In terms of the more tangible outputs, Out of the Box International had the chance to participate in the development of the Toolkit for Radio in Youth Work (IO1), the pilot series of 10 broadcasts titled ‘Around Europe in 60 minutes’ (IO2) and, finally, in the joint-staff training event “Developing competences for using radio in youth work”.

The project was officially closed on the 11th of October, 2021, with Out of the Box International, together with the Lodzky house in Brussels, organising a cocktail and networking hour to present the results of the Youth on Air project.

The project was implemented by 5 partners from 4 countries: Art of the Box (Belgium), Peshkar (United Kingdom), Out of the Box International (Belgium), Centrifuge (Serbia), CID (North Macedonia).

The project was co-financed by the Erasmus+ KA2 Programme of the European Commission

Why Out of the Box International

The seemingly ever-lasting depression of European economies has shaken the very foundations of many European societies. The shear rate of unemployment in Europe and the omnipresent environmental crisis coupled with the often frustratingly slow process of decision making in the EU, are calling for civil society actors to step in and fill the void.

In the aftermath of the 2008. economic crisis, the apprehension of falling under the spell of apathy of economic depression across the continent has not been easy to shake off. However, pinpointing the culprits for the current state of affairs on any particular EU decision maker is not the answer. Nonetheless, the fact remains that the current approach to the economic and environmental crisis hasn’t yet shown the affected citizens the light at the end of the tunnel.

As representatives of the civil society we feel the need to make our voice heard in the midst of the current debate on economic crisis. Being a social enterprise we offer new and feasible ideas in education and community work, creative cross-sectorial cooperation among different actors and strong networking coalitions to turn these dire economic challenges into possibilities through social entrepreneurship initiatives which aim at benefiting wide range of citizens, particularly vulnerable groups and those affected by the economic crisis.

Social entrepreneurship is a simple concept that has been put into practice by civil society actors for the benefit of a specific social group or people, and this is precisely what we want: to create projects and initiatives with fresh ideas in different policies, educational programs or tools, support businesses, empower cultural initiatives and offer different solutions to individuals, corporate bodies, everybody who believe that we can have more Creative, Innovative and Cohesive Europe.
