The project  ”First Work Experience for Lifelong Success” is focused on increasing employability by supporting learners from Vocational Schools to get practical experience and learn how to apply skills previously acquired in their education schemes. The aim of the project was achieved by placing the learners in 8 organizations for a few-month hands on working experience improving their employability potential. OTB rounded up a number of partner organizations for this project: Center for Intercultural Dialogue (Macedonia) as the Lead Partner, SCI International, Krog (Slovenia), TOG (Turkey), USB (Greece), Youth for Exchange Umbrella (Portugal). The project started in August 2014 and lasted for a year in total, a period during which two key issues obstructing employment were tackled: the lack of practical experiences to gain qualification and increase ones’ employability, and the lack of entrepreneurial attitudes, often limiting people to use the existing opportunities for self-employment.

Some of the concrete project objectives were to offer a practical connection between different institutions and organizations involved in the provision of educational and practical work experiences for people on the labor market. The idea was also to promote the motion of practical work experiences and learning that can be received within them as something which can increase not only mobility, but also lifelong learning of VET learners in the labor market. The practical outcome of the project which was supported by Erasmus+ VET Key Action 1 Learning Mobility of Individuals in the VET Field was to offer a better chance for the beneficiaries to find a job after the project ends. Therefore a specific accent was put on the follow-up stage of the project in putting this experience in the context of a real benefit, especially through acknowledgment of the learning outcomes.

Why Out of the Box International

The seemingly ever-lasting depression of European economies has shaken the very foundations of many European societies. The shear rate of unemployment in Europe and the omnipresent environmental crisis coupled with the often frustratingly slow process of decision making in the EU, are calling for civil society actors to step in and fill the void.

In the aftermath of the 2008. economic crisis, the apprehension of falling under the spell of apathy of economic depression across the continent has not been easy to shake off. However, pinpointing the culprits for the current state of affairs on any particular EU decision maker is not the answer. Nonetheless, the fact remains that the current approach to the economic and environmental crisis hasn’t yet shown the affected citizens the light at the end of the tunnel.

As representatives of the civil society we feel the need to make our voice heard in the midst of the current debate on economic crisis. Being a social enterprise we offer new and feasible ideas in education and community work, creative cross-sectorial cooperation among different actors and strong networking coalitions to turn these dire economic challenges into possibilities through social entrepreneurship initiatives which aim at benefiting wide range of citizens, particularly vulnerable groups and those affected by the economic crisis.

Social entrepreneurship is a simple concept that has been put into practice by civil society actors for the benefit of a specific social group or people, and this is precisely what we want: to create projects and initiatives with fresh ideas in different policies, educational programs or tools, support businesses, empower cultural initiatives and offer different solutions to individuals, corporate bodies, everybody who believe that we can have more Creative, Innovative and Cohesive Europe.
